The ABI Outlook on the Italian financial and credit markets confirms that 2017 saw an increase in loans granted by banks to households and firms (+ 2.3% on an annual basis) and a decline in interest rates applied: the average interest rate is equal to 2.69%, a new historical minimum. Good news for customers, therefore. And for the banks? Obviously, the average spread between loans and deposit rates, equal to 180 basis points – well below the 300 pre-crisis basis points – imposes other thoughts.
